why religions emphasis on going through pain filled rituals ?

WHY ??? :

Fundamentals of spiritual is to realize the "SPIRIT" within onself . For which differentation of SOUL,MIND,HEART ,body is important .During the period of having a physical body , We are creatures of senses - maybe it be taste , touch , smell , sorrow , happiness . So the basic idea is to make the mind to isolate the bodily senses .

How do we do that ? ? ? :

For which we need to understand how mind and body reacts on the bodily reaction - Pain . For ex-When we touch some hot - Signals[series of chemical reactions] are sent to the brain . If we can be immune to these signals . We no longer feel pain ,importantly when we want to !.Practicing this long enough , we slowly master our body and control the bodily senses through mind.

As we understand , control bodily senses through mind and heart [strike a balance between these two] , Maximizing the properties of these two - Mind[knowledge] and heart [love] will point to soul -ultimate source of energy .
